Coming out of the closet is not always easy. In fact, it’s a major, life changing process that takes a lot of courage. Clay Aiken, the former American Idol runner up has decided to have a baby with his best friend (through in vitro fertilization) and proclaim to the public that he’s gay. I was searching the internet and I stumbled across a few outraged “Claymates” (a term for his stalker-ish fans) and to my horror, one grown a** woman decided to rant about how she felt betrayed by Clay and she had no idea, at all that Clay was Gay! Really?? I mean really?? I believe in allowing people to come out of the closet in their own time and in their own way but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t know the boy was gay.
It seems Hollywood is trying to catch up a little with the times. Ellen did it and is experiencing the greatest success of her career. Rosie O’Donnell did it and now has $100,000,000 reasons to sit on the couch and eat twinkies! Lance Bass did it and he’s back in the public eye on “Dancing with the Stars”… Lindsay Lohan
partied her butt off, almost spent all her money and now she’s doing “it” with Samantha Ronson (she’ll be back in funds in no time)… So why is everyone so outraged and obsessed about who someone else (that they don’t even know) is sleeping with??
As a nation, we have to start looking beyond race, gender, sexual identity, economic status, religion and anything else that is none of our “d” business.. Besides, isn’t that what being an American is all about. We are FREE to be BLACK, WHITE, GAY, STRAIGHT, RICH, POOR, UGLY or BEAUTIFUL! And we’re free to do it fabulously! Don’t be on the wrong side of history people…

It has more to do with the fact that Clay Aiken portrayed himself as a “good Christian boy with high morals” and Christian morals and being gay don’t go together, that’s the betrayal. Clay’s entire (fake) image was based on lies from the get-go. We admired him for whom we thought he was (the person, besides the voice) but that turned out to be one huge lie. We can still like the voice (and yes that has nothing to do with gay or not gay) but the person behind the voice has betrayed the fans who believed in him and who on top of that suffered the ridicule from those who knew he was gay by siding with their idol and defending him. Fan believed in the purity of his word, of his persona and now we stand to question: was everything a lie? Some of us might not care to stick around and find out. Some of us have stopped caring altogether.
Wow!! This topic on identity is very well written. I hope I live to see the day when people aren’t so caught up in titles, stereotypes and labels. We should all be proud to be a part of the HUMAN race and happy that we’re free!!
Much love to you Paul!!
Was anyone REALLY surprised that he revealed to the world that he IS GAY?? Let Clay Gayken be!! Next…
